Interior
Wild, uninhabited interior accessible only in summer.
Search current availability for stays throughout Highlands.
Iceland's wild interior: glaciers, volcanoes, black deserts and rivers that only 4x4 vehicles can cross. Accessible only in summer.
Drive F-roads from the Ring Road or north coast. A 4x4 is legally required and river-crossing experience is essential on some routes.
One to three nights depending on the route. Many visitors do the highlands as a long day trip to Landmannalaugar or Askja.
Mid-June to early September only. Outside this window F-roads are closed and most huts and services shut down.
Mountain huts run by Ferðafélag Íslands, campsites at Landmannalaugar and Hveravellir, or a few remote highland lodges. Book huts well in advance.
