How to get there

Drive from Reykjavik along Route 1 in 2–3 hours to Vík, or 4–5 hours to Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón. Day tours run from Reykjavik, but staying overnight lets you see the sights at quieter times.

How long to stay

One night for Vík and the nearby beaches; two or three nights if you want to reach Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón without rushing.

When to visit

Summer for access, long days and puffins; winter for dramatic storms, ice caves and fewer crowds. Some highland side roads close outside summer.

Where to stay

Vík is the classic halfway stop with hotels and guesthouses. Kirkjubæjarklaustur is quieter and closer to Reykjavik. Skaftafell and Höfn work for the glacier-lagoon end.
