Iceland hotel booking tips
How to book smarter, save money, and avoid the mistakes first-time visitors make.
Book early for summer and public holidays
Iceland's hotel supply is limited outside Reykjavik. For June, July and August, book three to six months ahead. The same applies to Christmas, New Year and Easter, when Icelanders also travel domestically.
Use free cancellation whenever possible
Weather and road conditions can change your plans quickly. Free cancellation gives you flexibility without costing much more. It is especially useful for Ring Road trips where you may need to add or skip a night.
Consider guesthouses, hostels and apartments
Hotels are not the only option. Guesthouses often include breakfast and local advice. Hostels offer private rooms as well as dorms. Apartments with a kitchen save money on restaurants, which are expensive in Iceland.
Check what is included
Breakfast, parking and Wi-Fi are common but not universal. In rural areas, parking is usually free, but in Reykjavik it can be limited or paid. If you are renting a car, confirm parking before you book.
Location matters more than luxury
A simple guesthouse near your planned activities is often better than a fancy hotel far away. For example, staying in Vík saves hours of driving on the South Coast, and a base in Akureyri makes North Iceland much easier.
Read the cancellation and change rules
Some rural properties have stricter policies than city hotels. Check the deadline for free cancellation and whether changes are allowed. Screenshot the terms after booking.
Compare, then book direct if the price matches
Our search compares prices across providers. If the price is the same, booking through the hotel's preferred channel can make changes easier. Either way, the best price wins.
