Drive the Ring Road from Höfn to Egilsstaðir, then turn south into the fjords. The roads are paved but narrow and steep in places. A car is essential.
Two to four nights. One night rushes the main road; two or three let you hike, kayak and visit the smaller villages.
Summer is best for open roads, puffins and hiking. Winter is beautiful but some mountain roads close and daylight is short.
Egilsstaðir is the largest town and a practical base. Seyðisfjörður and Borgarfjörður eystri have small guesthouses with character.
