Campervan vs hotels

When a campervan wins

• Summer. Campsites are open, nights are light and you can chase the best weather.
• Flexibility. Change your route on a whim and stop wherever the light looks good.
• Remote areas. Useful where hotel rooms are scarce, like the highlands or the Westfjords.
• Cost sharing. For two or more people, a van plus campsites can beat hotel prices.

When a hotel wins

• Winter. Wind, rain and snow make van life miserable. A room with heating is worth it.
• Bad weather. A dry place to wait out a storm is a real comfort.
• Showers and luggage space. Hotels give you room to dry gear and repack.
• City nights. Reykjavik has limited, expensive campsites and great value guesthouses.

The real cost comparison

A campervan rental in summer is often more expensive than a small car plus budget rooms. Add campsite fees, fuel and the cost of eating out when you cannot be bothered to cook, and the savings shrink. In winter, a van is usually more expensive and far less comfortable than a guesthouse.

Campsite rules

Wild camping is not allowed on most land. Use designated campsites, which range from basic fields to fully serviced sites with kitchens and showers. Book ahead in July and August; popular sites fill up.

The hybrid option

Many travellers mix both: a few nights in a campervan for the rural part of the trip, then hotels in Reykjavik and Akureyri. This gives flexibility without sacrificing comfort where it matters most.
